St. Gallen is a real beauty of the eastern part of Switzerland and is one of the most elevated parts of the country, at almost 2,200 feet above the sea. This is a large city by By Swiss standards, with about 70,000 people living there permanently.
The city was founded by the Irish monk Gallus, who built a hut and settled on the river Steinach in 612. A hundred years later, an abbey was erected on the place where he lived and named after him. This abbey, which includes a cathedral, a library, and a new palace is the main attraction of the city. In 1983, this site was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
